That report is pretty thorough. I know my company has been focusing on hiring young talent. We can fill about twice as many bodies with the same budget. And these young people learn fast and start producing quickly!

An issue though- by doubling our sales force we created twice the amount of work for admin group.

I listened to one of the Sales Gravy podcasts about this some time back and it hit me as refreshing. Indeed, 'cold calling' in my part of the world is more closely associated with the "cast a wide net" approach to selling, which implants in my mind images of "Flo" from Southern Florida auto-dialing between cigarette breaks to offer me the latest in timeshares. What you are addressing is an almost covert targeted marketing strategy, which is all about social engineering. The BIG caveat here though is to master your own insight and never go at it with the mind to sell, but rather to inform and plant seeds. The time to sell will present itself. Sometimes it takes a couple of weeks for results, and sometimes a year or more, but in my experience the results have ALWAYS been positive when the mission is properly executed.

<a href="#comment-1153" rel="nofollow">@Jeb </a>
Thank you Mark & Jeb. You are right - the season has prompted a lot of people to think deeper about secondary income. Our business has been busy because many people are turning to us to implement tools and strategies to start new businesses using their natural talents and acquired skills. It is a time to rethink and ACT!

Mark - I completely agree. In fact, my company, SalesGravy.com has used the recession to capture huge market share from our competitors. It is all about mindset, accepting risk and taking action. - Jeb

Great article Jeb. Most people use a recession as an excuse. In my opinion, a recession is a big opportunity. It is an opportunity to check whether your value proposition is a "must-have" rather than a "nice-to-have". It is also an opportunity to accelerate market share capture as the big guys down-size and stop investment in growth projects. For these reasons, some of the best companies have been built in terrible economies. I say embrace a down economy and sell through it with Jeb's tips.

Regarding point 6, the compensation plan. Everybody tells you to have one but few will tell you how much you should pay. This article on "Are Your Salespeople Overpaid" might help. http://tinyurl.com/d8nd56
