The Value of Positive Internal Messages

Starting out your day with positive internal messages will give you the confidence and resiliency to be more productive, while simultaneously lifting up the people around you. Here’s a great strategy for waking up on the right side of the bed— every single day.

How We Talk To Ourselves Matters

Even top performers have trouble with their internal messages from time to time. Internal messages refer to what some might call “self-talk” or one’s “inner voice”.

What we tell ourselves is important, not only for our own mental wellbeing and productivity but also for our relationships, because you unknowingly transfer your attitude to others. If your attitude is bad, then your message is bad, and other people can pick up on that.

Positivity Determines Productivity

In a totally unscientific “study”, I asked several of my friends, colleagues, and family members to write down their very first thoughts of the day when they woke up.

Then, they were to immediately send me a text or an email and report to me what their first thoughts of the day were. I asked them to do this for a week.

The results were interesting and very divided. Some of the people who helped me out with this were stunned to realize that they began most of their days with a negative thought.

For example, their thought might have been something to the effect of, “Ugh, I’m not looking forward to today.”

When I asked each one of these folks how productive their day was, ALL of them said that they didn’t get done what they wanted to— not even close.

Some of these folks were in sales, while others were in operational roles, and the rest were professionals like accountants, lawyers, and doctors.

For the participants who started the day off with a thought that was more positive, such as, “Man, this is going to be a great day,” they reported much more positivity throughout the day, greater productivity, and more confidence in their abilities overall.

You Have The Power To Set The Tone For Your Day

When you consciously and deliberately begin your day with positive thinking, you pre-frame your own internal message. This in turn sets the tone for the rest of the day. You carry the initial perception of the day with you as you journey through each hour.

Start with a good, optimistic thought and the trend continues that way. Conversely, initiate a bad or pessimistic thought and you will battle uphill all day long.

If you have confidence or feel good early on, you take that feeling with you in every interaction. You essentially transfer your positive emotions to every person you come in contact with.

Now, really think about this. If you were in the shoes of the people that you are talking to, would you rather be around a person who has a positive outlook or would you want to be around the person who sounds like Eeyore from Winnie the Pooh?

A Simple Trick For Practicing Positivity

Here’s a trick to start the day off with a positive approach.

On a sticky note, write down a reminder to yourself to write out a positive phrase first thing in the morning, before you start anything. (I put the note on my computer the night before).

This way, you start programming your initial internal message of the day to be a positive one— consciously not allowing negativity to creep into your mindset.

Do this for thirty days and you will transform yourself, your outlook, and automatically bring more positivity into your interactions with others.
