Is Coaching Worth The Investment?

Investing in a coach might seem scary or like it is too big of a risk without the promise of a reward. The fact is, investing in a coach is an investment in yourself. The return on your coaching investment is determined by the investment you make and the effort you put into your own success.

Hiring A Coach Might Seem Crazy

The first time I hired a coach, I felt crazy and I was afraid of what my friends and my husband would say. Sure enough, I got a lot of criticism for it. But no one knew what I needed in my business more than I did. I had to tune everyone out and trust my gut.

My first coaching investment was $10,000 for the year, and at the time,  I was only netting $50,000 in my business. That was terrifying for me.

I quadrupled my net in that year. So the next year, I went bigger and invested $30,000 in a coach. Yes, that’s $2,500 a month. And again, I made more money not just from the coaching, but from also being surrounded by other business people more successful than myself to inspire and motivate me.

Don’t Allow Fear to Hold You Back

Investing in oneself is just that. It’s an investment. Taking a risk like that can be a scary proposition, but only if you’re in a scarcity mindset. Funny how the words scary and scarcity sound so similar, isn’t it?

Whether you work with a mentor, accountability partner, or coach, you must be intentional to meet with them, listen to them, consider their advice and do the work to reach your goals. And you need to plan for a return on your investment of time, money, or both. Otherwise, don’t bother wasting your time or the coach’s time.

Skin In The Game

Coaches-for-hire must guide you to your results. Mentors for free will get you there on their schedule, not yours.

As the Director of Coaching Programs at Sales Gravy, I’m a coach who sells coaching services, so of course, I transparently favor the pay-to-play route. I’ve engaged both mentors for free and coaches for hire.

Both worked, but my results were always better when I had “skin in the game” (when I paid for it). And as an entrepreneur, I had what bestselling author Jeb Blount calls a “CEO mindset”. In some cases, the cash investment was so out of my mental comfort level that I had no choice but to hustle and do the work to recoup the expense.

Coaching ROI: Is It Worth It?

Since most coaching clients pay out of their pocket, the buyer’s journey is extremely personal. I’ve heard every money objection in the book when selling coaching and training. The most recent objection I have heard is something along the lines of: “We have to buy a new fence for our house, so now isn’t a good time.”

What they failed to realize is that by investing in a coach that’s the right fit for them, they would be able to buy ten new fences, a sunroom, and an all-inclusive vacation. Remember— investing in a coach is an investment in yourself.
