Top performers do not let other people’s opinions and beliefs hold them back from building the career of their dreams. If you want to achieve a new level of success this year, you have to be willing to do whatever it takes.
You can change your habits, mindset, beliefs, and choices at any time—no matter who you are, where you are going, what you believe, or what you are going through. You must aggressively eliminate all of the self-doubts preventing you from maximizing your success and reaching your sales career goals.
Do not assume everything will go your way because you are smart, beautiful, talented, and living in the right country. You will be in trouble when things don’t go as planned and life smacks you in the face.
Living as though you are entitled to anything is playing with fire. There will always be someone right around the corner who knows that they have to earn every penny they get. They will fly right past you and any other person who is moving slowly or waiting for their handout.
Being entitled is toxic and it can kill your sales career goals and dreams. You need to have the right mindset to work hard and to struggle for anything and everything you get. That is far closer to reality than believing you are entitled to anything.
Typically, people who struggle and fight like hell beat people with an entitled mindset— especially in the long run.
Life is not easy. It never will be, so do not try to make it that way.
Life is not fair. It never was, it isn’t now, and it never will be.
Don’t fall into the trap of entitlement. Don’t let yourself believe you are a victim when you are not.
Achieving your career goals becomes easier and fairer when you put in the work and accept responsibility. Additionally, most things are more rewarding when you break a sweat to get them.
There is nothing more debilitating to success than a bad attitude. I’ve met people facing the most difficult situations of loss, handicaps, and disease who maintain a great attitude and live fulfilled lives. Attitude is everything.
Cornerstones of a bad attitude — a victim mindset, hatred, prejudice, entitlement — will hinder your success and happiness. You can increase the likelihood of your success just by changing the way you view things.
We will all experience good and bad events, whether it’s life or death, marriage or divorce, successes or failures. For example, look at the Great Depression or the Great Recession of 2007-2009 and the collapse of the housing bubble. Think about the early 2000s collapse of the dot-com bubble, or the coronavirus pandemic happening as I write this book. All of these recessions and economic collapses can make you stronger, smarter, and better at your job. On the other hand, they can also make you poorer, weaker, and worse at your profession.
Your attitude and how you embrace times of adversity will mentally make you or break you. The best part is, you get to decide! We can be grateful for these events and learn from them, both good and bad. Or we can hate the things that happened to us and think the world is against us. What will you choose?
I’ve had hundreds of venture capitalists pass on investing in Seamless and our vision to positively impact one billion people. The feedback from all of these venture capitalists was the same:
“Your market is not good enough.”
“That idea is not good enough.”
“Your team is not good enough.”
“Your education is not good enough.”
“This product is not good enough.”
“Your development background is not good enough.”
“You’re not good enough.”
Their Excel financial projection scorecard told them we “weren’t good enough.”
They were protecting their investors, which I have grown to appreciate. Having said that, I got rejected by hundreds of investors and VCs. After hearing, “Brandon, right now it’s a pass, but keep up the good work. We’ll look at investing in the future,” it hurt badly. It was terrible. But I always asked them why they weren’t interested.
Then, I wrote their response down and learn from all of their honest feedback. I went back to the office and continue selling, building, iterating, optimizing, hustling, and developing. Fast forward, and today we are growing 50 to 100 percent, month over month. Now, we are turning down multimillion-dollar venture capital investment offers.
My advice for all of you out there with sales career goals or an entrepreneurship dream is simple:
Never quit! Rejection is not the end of a road; it is a sign you need to adjust your strategy.
